CONGRATULATIONS ETHAN AND JUSTIN!

Mad props to our Unlimited young men. Ethan Sutton took first team regional honors for scholastic achievement and Justin Sartin Scott made the second team! We are so proud of both of you and more importantly, you should be proud of yourselves. Way to represent the black and yellow, and our first year to boot!

Ethan and Justin are our All-Americans, earning a GPA of 96% or better for Ethan and Justin, 90-95%. Criteria for this award is based on both community involvement and academic achievements.

These young men will be honored during the regional awards March 9th at the Red Lion Quay in Vancouver. The following week the two will be recognized nationally in Reno! We are elated to have two stellar youth as the face of your Portland Steelers.

Please join us from 6-8pm at the Red Lion Inn at the Quay in downtown Vancouver. Saturday, March 9, 2013. Entry is free. This is a dessert banquet, so feed the kids first. Please dress nice casual. We want to represent!  Hoping to see our nation and community there in support of our academic all-stars!

GOODBYE 2012

Your Portland Steelers gathered together for the last time as they said goodbye to the 2012 season. It all began like every game. All of us working together to make it happen, something we have done all year.

Looking around the room all three divisions were intertwined. There was no division. And that was what this season was all about—being a part of a team. Wins, losses, final records—in time, forgotten. It is the friendships that we made along the way that we will leave the field with. The countless hours of work, time and energy to make it all happen? One glance at the smiles on all of our athletes faces throughout the celebration... That said it all.

This was our first year; and a bit crazy along the way. Which is how all families are—a bit dysfunctional. But at the same time the ones who always got your back. We made it through. Black and yellow together. Steelers forever.

Cheers to 2012! Some of us will never see each other again, some just a long time. Here is hoping that all of us took from the season the friendships we made and the promise of new beginnings. Thanks to all the families, athletes and cheer who came together to make this nation happen. Together we were united. Together we are strong. Look out 2013!

!!!!PROUD TO BE A STEELER!!!!

blazersPlease Join Us in congratulating our very own DeJuan Chesterfieldford with the Trail Blazers, Northwest Ford Stores Honor of Coach of the Year for 2012

The Portland Trail Blazers and Northwest Ford Stores have announced the 2012 “Ford Coaches of the Year”, recognizing four local individuals for their outstanding leadership in the community. Nominations were submitted from across the state and included teachers, counselors, coaches, mentors and anyone making a difference in the lives of Oregon and southwest Washington’s youth. The winners will each be awarded $2,500 toward an organization of their choice and will also be recognized by the Trail Blazers and Northwest Ford Stores during a special ceremony in his or her hometown. In addition, each winner will be honored in-arena on April 9 when the Trail Blazers take on the Houston Rockets. Northwest Ford Stores generously donated the award money in hopes of assisting with the depletion of activity funds faced by schools and organizations statewide, allowing the company a unique opportunity to give back to the community.

2012 “Ford Coach of the Year” Honorees:

DeJuan Chesterfield – Youth Football Coach, Pop Warner Portland Steelers, Portland, OR

coach of the year

Phil Kent – Girls Basketball, Seton Catholic Varsity, Vancouver, WA
Fritz Page – Youth Boys Basketball Coach, Westview High School, Portland, OR

MISSION STATEMENT:

The PORTLAND STEELERS have been organized to promote a positive image to the youth of Portland. Educating to live better and longer is our cornerstone. Make a positive difference now, to have a positive outcome later. We will expect the best from the best. We will put our players/cheer members concerns and welfare first. We will accommodate them with the best possible environment to learn, grow, and be safe in. Make this be about the future...OUR KIDS.

 Benefits of Playing Pop Warner:

The Nation's Largest & Oldest Youth Football and

Cheer & Dance Organization Since 1929

Here are a few of the many reasons you should join Pop Warner:

NO TRYOUTS!

– Pop Warner programs have no tryouts or cutting of rosters!

Programs in 42 States & 7 Countries

– Pop Warner has active programs in 42 states and 7 different countries.

More than just athletes!

– Pop Warner is the only national youth sports organization in America that requires its participants to perform adequately in the classroom before permitting them to play.

 Little Scholars Program

– Pop Warner is the only national youth sports organization in America that rewards its members for their outstanding performance in the classroom.

 Stability

– Pop Warner is the oldest national youth football and cheerleading organization in the world. Founded in 1929 by Joe Tomlin, we now have over 140 leagues and over 425,000 members.

 It's Inexpensive

– Signing up for Pop Warner Football, Cheerleading or Dance is inexpensive. A typical registration fee for each participant ranges from about $75 to $200 for the season. Registration fees are set by each local program.

 Pop Warner National Championships

– Each year, Pop Warner hosts the Pop Warner Super Bowl and National Cheer and Dance Championships. For the past 11 years, the event has taken place at ESPN's Wide World of Sports Complex™at Disney World. More than 300 cheer and dance squads and 64 football teams compete for the right to be crowned Pop Warner National Champion.

 National Scholar Banquet

– Pop Warner hosts an awards program each year to celebrate the accomplishments of our participants. Nationally, we select First Team, Second Team and Honorable Mention All-American Scholars.

 College Scholarships

- Each year, we award scholarships for higher education to the most deserving students in our highest grade levels. Pop Warner is proud to have awarded nearly one million dollars in scholarships in just 17 years!

 Mandatory Play Requirements

– Everyone participates under mandatory rules of play, so every child is guaranteed to play.

 Age-Weight Structure

– Kids compete with kids of similar age and size. We set and enforce a strict AGE & WEIGHT MATRIX that reduces the risk and reality of injuries.

 Volunteers & Coaches

– We have over 40,000 volunteers and coaches that are being trained every year to offer the best and safest programs for you and your children.

 Background Checks

– Pop Warner programs nationwide are required to annually conduct a background check of Coaches, Board of Directors members and any other persons, volunteers or hired workers, who provide regular service to the league and/or have repetitive access to, or contact with, players and/or spirit participants. The purpose of these background checks is, first and foremost, to protect the children.

 Safety, Safety, Safety!

– Kids compete with kids of similar age and size. Pop Warner is the ONLY youth football program (local, regional and national) that sets and enforces a strict AGE & WEIGHT MATRIX that reduces the risk and reality of injuries. Did you know that Pop Warner football is safer than soccer? Pop Warner football has 12% fewer injuries per capita among 5-15 year olds than organized soccer in the same age range!

 Concussion Prevention & Awareness

–In addition to its more stringent return to play concussion rules, which have been in place for the 2010 season, Pop Warner recently announced the formation of the inaugural Pop Warner Medical Advisory Board. The Medical Advisory Board was created to ensure Pop Warner remains proactive on all medical issues that affect youth sports, particularly football and cheerleading, with a primary focus on prevention and proper identification and treatment of concussions, hydration awareness, proper nutrition guidelines, and general health and safety issues.

Statement from Portland Pop Warner

Pop Warner programs perform a mandatory background check for all volunteers and we take that policy very seriously. Anyone who has been found guilty of a crime involving a minor is prohibited from participating in the program in any manner. We are working closely with authorities on any inquires they have on the accused. As coaches, administrators and parents, we find these allegations extremely disturbing.  We will continue to work and ensure that all procedures meant to protect the children are in place as it is of the highest priority to Portland Pop Warner.
